DAY OF PRAYED.

FELLOWSHIP OF CHURCHES

Palmerston North observed the women’s world-wide Day of Prayer yesterday by holding an undenominational service in the Congregational Church, Broadway Avenue, when reprosentativer; of Palmerston North churches added their prayers for a world fellowship of churches.

The service commenced with a hymn ami responsive readings, which were followed by an address by Captain Booth, of the Terrace End Salvation Army’ Corps, whose subject was “The Church, a. World Fellowship.” A Reading from the Epistle of St. Jude, “Upon this rock 1 will build My Church,” coupled with a. verse from the Proverbs, “Wisdom has builded her house and her house hath seven pillars,’’ Captain Booth likened a building to the great edifice of Christianity, which was built up of individuals and individual parts. The speaker said, she had no new teachings, only the ancient and familiar Biblical truths, and mankind could build up his life anew by’ them. To-day, as current events showed, the foundations of religion were being assailed, arid it was only by prayer and a determined effort hv all churches for unity and co-operation, that we could go in safety, said the speaker. Faith was essential and although it wavered sometimes, prayer would restore it. “Faith stops out upon the seeming void, and finds the rook beneath,” Captain Booth quoted, concluding with another quotation from a wayside pulpit in Wellington, “Wanted, for the Kingdom of God upon earth, fewer architects and more builders,” adding that it was best to leave the planning to the Divine Architect and the building to mankind. Airs W. Nicholls (president of the committee), in welcoming Captain Booth, said that they were proud that she had volunteered to give the address in place of Ivlajor Tayler, who was indisposed, and especially pleased because she was a Palmerston North girl. She was sure the address had been an inspiration ■ to all, on whose behalf she thanked Captain Booth.

The service concluded with intercessory prayer and a period of extempore pray’er followed by the Benediction. . ,

The committee responsible for conducting the service comprised Mesdames Nicholls (Congregational Church), G. W. Scott (St. Andrew's) secretary, Alouat (St. Andrew’s), Crome (St. David’s), Bingham (Evangelical), Orabbe (Baptist), Smart (Queen Street Hall), A. Blakemore (Cube Street Methodist), and G. H. Byeroft (St. Paul’s Alethodist).
