PAHIATUA.
PAHIATUA, March 1. Rev. Father Walsh, of Wellington, is relieving Rev. Father Oashman during the latter’s absence at the centenary celebrations in Auckland. Mr G. 0. C. Oxley left Pabiatua yesterday morning to attend the funeral of his sister in-law, Mrs Stewart Austin, who was well known in this district, Mr D. Burlace is at present an inmate of the Pabiatua Hospital, where lie recently underwent an operation. The following are the vital statistics for Pabiatua for February, those for the corresponding period of 1937 being given in parentheses: Births, 7 (13); deaths, 3 (1); marriages, 9 (4). Mr G. Godfrey Taylor presided at the monthly meeting of the Pabiatua District High School Committee, held last night, at which it was reported that a boxing class had been formed under Mr S. P. Walsh, whose- efforts were being fully availed cf by the children. The Pabiatua Boxing Association had lent several sets of gloves, and Mr Beales had donated a set of gloves. The chairman reported on a recent visit of the Education Board secretary, wherein ho had advised, the latter that the Main Highways Board staff had been instructed to carry out the playground scaling, hut had advised the board to wait and have the job done after the school’s outbuildings had been completed. Knowing that the Highways Board wore well on the way with the sealing of the streets, the speaker said lie had urged that: tenders be called immediately,
the plans for which were already lying in the Education Board’s office. The advertisement calling tenders had been • received the following day, which made him think that tho only way to get anything done was to ask them face to face. The report of the dental clinic nurse (Miss.M. do Beorc) stated that re-examinations were made as under: Pahialua 19, Mangamutu 19, Mangahno 12 and Konini 8. Thirteen new patients were enrolled. The headmaster reported that the school roll on February 1 was 290 —241 in the primary department and 49 in the secondary; Two pupils had been enrolled since that date. The privilege of allowing people to ■'•isit the school grounds had been abused. Seventy-nine children had been taught to swim distances from 5 to 50 yards. All but six of the personnel of 18 of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade participated in the annual contest for the Hedges Memorial Shield during the week-end. The shield was ■won by Fireman H. Meade. Tho judges wore Superintendent W. Lawry and Fireman -'E. Collins. Firemen J. Stokes and A. Gowler wore handicappens. Deputy-Superintendent 11. Stokes was the starter. Tho time-keeping was in the hands of tho secretary (Mr C. Meade) and Fireman A. Gowler. Results: —Union event: Superintendent W. Lawry (running--54 l-ssec, 1 sec handicap, total 53 l-sscc) 1; Fireman E. Collins (59sec, ssce, 54sce), 2; Fireman B. Fairwcathcr (56sec, 6sec, 56scc), 3. No 2 event: Fireman A. Gowler (42 3-sscc, scr), 1; Fireman H. Meade (52 l-sscc, 4 sec, penalty, 9sce handicap, total 47 l-ssec), 2; Deputy R. Stokes (45 3-ssoe, 3scc penalty, lsec. handicap, total 47 3-ssee) 3. No. 3 event: Fireman 11. Meade (45sec, handicap Bsoc, total 37scc), 1; Deputy R. Stokes (40 l-secc, 4scc, handicap. total 37 l-ssoc), 2; Superintendent W. Lawry (38sec. scr) and Foreman T. Morgan (43? cc, lsec penalty, 6sec handicap, total 38scc), equal 3.
