SANDON SPORTS
MINISTER, TO BE INVITED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, Feb. 5. At a meeting of tho Sandon Sports Club on Thursday evening it was decided to endeavour to arrange for Hon. W, E. Parry to attend the annual sports of the club, which are to be held on March 19. It was felt that tho Minister would bo keenly interested in the type of sports held at Sandon in view of his interest in the proposed activities of the National Council of Physical Welfare. The president (Mr A. K. Drew) was m the chair. TheULevin District High School wrote regarding certain matters in connection with the ball games and hurdle events. The secretary was instructed to advise tho headmaster that the regulation sizo basketball will be used for the ball games and that the hurdles will be 2ft 3in for children 12 and under and 2ft 6in for children 15 and under. Mr J, Scott advised that he would not be able to accept the position of piper for the highland duncing. ; Received with regret and*the secretary was instructed to arrange for a piper. The secretary of the Manawatu Amateur Athletic Association advised that Mr A. Weston acted as the handicapper for the association, and suggested that the club appoint Mr Weston as handicapper. The secretary was instructed to communicate with Mr Weston and ask him to act as handicapper for the senior running events. The chairman reported that since the last meeting- it had been found that the date previously decided on, March 5, clashed with the Bulls races, and it was found necessary to alter the date to March 19, The action of the executive was confirmed. Matters relating to the ground were discussed at length, and it was decided that tho grounds committee (Messrs C. E. Eglinton, F. S. Collier,- K. M. Pearce and A. s Kilpatrick) meet at the grounds next week and decide on what action is to be taken. Mr Drew said that the Government were keenly interested in sports of this nature and he thought the club should invite Mr Parry to attend the sports and see for himself exactly what was being carried out. The Minister is fostering the activities of the National Council of Physical Welfare and sports which cater for so many children are on tho lines of the activities proposed. Mr A. Kilpatrick considered it advisable to make application to the Government for financial assistance to assist the club to do greater things, lhe president, in reply, 6aid that he did not think it was necessary at the present time, but that tho great thing was to get the Minister’s interest in the children s sports. Mr S. L. Orr commended the suggestion, and was of opinion that the club should make every endeavour to arrange for the Minister' to attend. It was unanimously decided to communicate with the member for the district, Mr C. L. Hunter and ask if he could arrange for the Minister to attend on the afternoon of the sports.
