WOODVILLE COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Wooclville Countv Council was held yesterday, Cr. !M. O. Grainger presiding. Also present were Crs. R. T. Mabey, G. Peebles, H. R. Morgan, J. Galloway, O. H. Dvuce, H. Sheffield and S D Cattanach. 4 . ‘The district engineer of the Public Works Department wrote stating that it had never been intended that the extended programme for the metalling of settlement roads should be provided on a free money basis. It was regretted that the council had turned down the offer of £2 for £l, which was considered generous. The matter of making additions to the county cottage at Kumeroa was referred to the engineer. The transfer of property from M. E. Norman to E. W. Norman was npPr ° Ved ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer (Mr W. J. Hirwkes) reported as follows: —Woodville i Riding : Grading was done on I infold, Woodlands and Oxford Roads and metal repairs were attended to on Saddle, Hope’s, Beagley’s, Pinfold and Foley’s Roads. Extra longitudinal planks were placed on Foley’s Road bridge. Repairs were ''attended to on Pinfold, Hope’s'and Woodlands Roads. A side drain on Leith s Road uas cleaned; extra work is required there as soon as an opportunity occurs Culverts were renewed and repaired and drains cleaned on Pinfold Road. Man-ga-atua Riding: Bluff, Range, Jackson’s and Troup Roads were graded, and metal repairs attended to where necessary. Decking - repairs were effected to bridges on Blomhold, \voodlands, Bluff and Jackson’s Roads. I-he replacing of an old timber bridge on Bluff Road was completed. The main drain off Masterton Road was cleaned to Mnnga-atua Stream. Kumeroa Biding- Metal repairs were attended toon Otawhao, Totara, and River Roads. Decking repairs were attended to oil bridges on Peart’s, River, Paliaheke, and Thtara Roads. River and 1 ownship Roads were graded. _ Overhanging fern on Druce’s Road is being cut. Maharahara Riding: Grading and metal repairs were done on bturdee, Ross and Jackson’s Roads. A fair amount of surface damage was done during the recent heavy ram, especially on Gaisford’s Road, where the Raparapawai Stream overflowed. It will be necessary to construct a new channel here before winter. Various bridge and culvert were attended to "throughout the riding. ' Main Highways.—Napier-Palmerston North: The longitudinal decking on Simpson’s bridge was repaired. Sealing work will be completed this week. Woodville-Masterton: The Maungaatua Stream bridge approaches were graded and metalled. Woodville-Hope-lands, No. 6: This road was graded and metal repairs were attended to where necessary;_ water-tables were cleaned. YVoodville-Tamaki, No. 7-8: Grading was done throughout and metal repairs attended to. Side drains were cleaned and culverts repaired. Two hardwood stringers were put in Oruakiritaki Stream bridge. Plans, specifications and estimates for the elevation of approaches to this bridge are almost completed. Freelands Highway No. 9: Grading was done throughout,’ culverts repaired and metal repairs carried out where necessary. Willows were removed and a new cut put in the Rapnrapawai Stream bed. Groyne protection work will be proceeded with as soon as sealing on the main highway is completed. In retard to the steps he had taken to warn motorists and other users of the road of the danger to the bridge at Maharahara, caused by the flood, it was decided to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Joblin. The report was adopted.
