COVERS FOR SHEEP.

COMMON IN OAMARU DISTRICT. Per Press Association. OAMARU, Dec. 21. A message received from Wellington yesterday, referred to the covering of flock sheep in Australia, and inferred that the practice is not usual in New Zealand. It is not uncommon in this district; in fact, one maker at the moment is completing an order for 500 covers and this is onlv one of many. These covers are for flock sheep not stud sheep.

The message referred to is that in which Mr George Davidson, junr., of a Wellington woolhroking firm, on his return from a visit to Australia said he was impressed by the practice of rugging sheep. For many years stud sheep had been rugged in Australia. Mr Davidson said, but it was only during the last two years or so that practical experiments had been made with flock sheep, and these had proved very successful. Not only had the wool improved in respect of better growth and freedom from vegetable matter, but also these, sheep had deevloped a more robust frame. In his opinion New Zealand should follow closely what was being done in Australia in the matter of rugging sheep. There appeared to he sound economic reasons for it, he said.
