Mr W. G. Black, who has been obliged to enter hospital, underwent a serious operation this morning. He is stated to he in a most satisfactory condition. Rev. Canon E. D. Rice who has been vicar at St. Mary’s Church, Waipukurau, for 13 years, has found it necessary through ill-health to forward his 'resignation to the Bishop of AVaiapu. His retirement will probably take effect in a few* months. Major John Buckley, D. 5.0., M.C., representative of the New Zealand Honey Control Board in London, will arrive in Auckland on November 26. He is an international bridge player and a former, boxing champion of the Indian Army. Major Buckley is visting the Dominion for the purpose of discussing questions arising from the sale of New Zealand honey in Great Britain. At the invitation of Christian Science churches in New Zealand a series of free lectures is being given by Mr Gavin AV. Allan, of Toronto, who has for many years been a member of the Board of Lectureship in Boston. Before coming to New Zealand at the beginning of this month Mr Allan lectured to large audiences in various States of Australia. Mr Allan is at present visiting Palmerston North. The death occurred suddenly at AVellington on Saturday of Mr Charles Robert Broberg, M.V.0., at the age of 67 years. Mr Broberg joined the police force in Dunedin in 1895 as a constable. He was transferred to AVellington in 1899 as a member of the detective force, becoming chief detective in 1909. In 1915 he went to Dunedin as sub-inspector, and was afterward transferred successively' to Auckland (1917) and to AVellington (1918). In 1919 he w r as promoted to be inspector, and then superintendent. He was the holder of the Royal Humane Society’s certificate, which he was awarded ill 1894. Mr Broberg, wfio, besides being a member of the A 7 ictorian Order, was a Justice of the Peace, was widely known throughout New Zealand. He was acknowledged to be one of the most capable detectives New Zealand has had, and it was his lot to conduct many important criminal investigations. He is survived by his wife and a son, Mr Robert E. Broberg.
