PAYMENT OF FINES. MAGISTRATE’S OBSERVATIONS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 23. When twelve men were fined amounts ranging from £2 10s to £36 each in the Police Court to-day for making false sustenance statements, the Magistrate (Mr Levien) said he did not think excessive time should be allowed to pay such fines. “There have been many of these cases before the Court,” he said, “and the costs are mounting up. It will mean the department will have to employ extra clerical assistance to complete the records. I consider two or three months ample time in which to pay these fines.” When one man said he had been asked to sign under another name before he could get work on the waterfront the Magistrate asked the prosecuting officer if he had ary evidence of anyone being behind such a system on the wharf, or whether it was a matter of individual efforts.
The officer replied that when a check was made in March when back pay was not claimed the Department of Labour had found that a number of men were working under other names on the waterfront to avoid declaring their income, but he could not say that was the result of any organisation.
