(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Nov. > 26. Judging of entries in tho Boys’ apd Girls’ Calf Club competition took place at the Shannon School on Wednesday afternoon and, despito tlie boisterous weather, there was a good attendance of parents. The ladies of the W.D.F.U. provided much appreciated afternoon tea. Mr R. L. Tippler judged the calves and Mr G. Mumtord the sheep. Awards were as follow:—Championship cup: Keith Graham. Senior class, calf care and attention : Keith Graham 1, Roysc Murray 2, Maurice Rolston 3, Ken Woods and Robert Barber, v.li.c. Junior class, care and attention: Hugh Mumford l, Waller Rolston 2, Mavis Leppor 3, Lily Woods and Barbara Bradtield v.h.c. Dairy type: Keith Gralium 1, Bob Barnett 2, Jean Cameron 3. Shorthorn calf: Gloria Doyle 1. Junior pupils: Lambs, Clarence ■ Sinclair 1, Laurie Andrews 2, Grace Smith 3, Verna Lang, Lorna Lang, and Frank Jamieson h.c. The standard of entries was not up to that of last season, but this is accounted for by the unseasonal conditions prevailing during the last few months. The Bowling Club singles championship has been completed, the winner being Mr J. Roach. Un Monday evening two rinks from the Levin Club paid a visit to Shannon and played a inpst’ enjoyable social game, tho visitors expressing pleasure at . the playing condition under the electric light. The ladies of Ven. Bede’s Church havo been conducting a series of card evenings for tho church funds, and these functions are gaining in popularity. The winners on Monday evening were Miss R. Harding and Mr R. Eagle. Constable R. Boyd, who is on holiday, has been touring tlie Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki. and Wairarapa districts by motorcar, accompanied by hie brother and sis-ter-in-law from Australia.
Mr C. M. Cronqucst is on a visit to Dunedin. Mrs CTonquest is with her mother in Wellington. .At the November meeting of the Shannon Women’s Institute, there was a large attendance representatives of sister organisations who had been specially invited Practically the whole afternoon was devoted to an excellent demonstration of calce icing and decoration, given by Mr Kennerley, of Levin. Being a past-mas-ter at the art, and most generous with helpful hints, Mr Kennerley kept the attention of all and the afternoon was voted one of the best held in Shannon. A donation of decorations made by the demonstrator found a ready sale, and ho was given a vote of thanks for his kindly action. The month’s competition for the best arranged flowers in a jar resulted: Mrs Bovis 1, Mrs L. Satherley 2, Mrs Harper 3. The next meeting is to be combined with the nnnual children’s party in tho Parish Hall, and members will each supply a plate. The competition is to be for a Christmas novelty costing no moro than Is. j A successful euchre party for the health camp funds was held by the Women’s Institute, tho prizewinners being Mrs Black and Mr C. Satherley.
