RUSSIAN PEASANTS.
SEIZE FOOD SUPPLIES
It is reported in Riga from Odessa that a crowd of infuriated workmen and peasants attacked the Poltava military stores and seized a quantity of foodstufis. The Poltava District Commandant ordered the soldiers to open fire, whereupon a regular battle ensued between the Soviet troops and the population. Twenty-three were killed and 50 wounded.
Uistrubances are also reported in the Donetz region and ‘Konotop district as a consequence of the peasants’ refusal to surrender food supplies to the authorities. Two thousand peasants and workmen have been arrested in different parts of Soviet Ukraine during recent weeks. The peasants contend that their crops have suffered considerably from the severe drought, which lasted ten weeks this summer, and, therefore, they cannot deliver the large quantities of loodstuffs stipulated by the Soviet programme.
