ASHHURST

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, May 26.

The fourth annual reunion of the Ashhurst Returned Soldiers’ AEssociation, which was held on Friday evening, was attended by over eighty cx-serviecmeii. Vinitors were present from Otaki, Apiti, Halcombe, Fcilding, and Palmerston North, and all agreed that the evening was in all respects an unqualified success. Rev. H. B. Goertz (president of the local branch), in extending a hearty welcome to those present, expressed the gratification felt at the presence of Major-General It. Young, C. 8., C'.AI.G., D. 5.0., and Mr B. J. Jacobs (Dominion vice-president of the association) whoso loyal support largely accounted for the growing strength ol the local branch. After the loyal toast had been honoured the chair was taken by General Young, who was accorded a remarkable ovation, indicating the high esteem in which he is held by the “Diggers.” “Absent Comrades” were remembered by Bugler Cook sounding the Last Pest and Reveille and A/r C. Ai. Stanley (Apiti) sing “Requiem.” Mr Stanley was accompanied at the piano by Air J. Hansen, of Kimbolton. In proposing the toast; of the “X.Z.R.5.A.,” Colonel J. 11. Whyte clearly outlined the service rendered by the association and exhorted everyone to remember the dictum, “Unity is Strength.” Replying, Air B. J. Jacobs gave an interesting resume of the activities of the association, making special reference to efforts being made on behalf of soldier settlers. Further toasts honoured were: —“The A.1.F.,” proposed by Air A. Balmer and replied to by All- R. G. Roberts (Kimbolton); “Kindred Associations,” proposed by Mr A. .McKinley, tlie response being in the capable hands of Air Clark (Legion of Frontiersmen); “The Visitors,” proposed by Air T. Spelman and replied to by Air F. Prujcan (Apiti), Air R. Burgess (Halcombe). Air Simcox (Otaki), and Air S. Nicholson (Alanawam Pipe Band). Excellent items were contributed by the Kimbolton melody quartette, Air J. Hansen also pleasing with a vocal solo as well as providing pianoforte accompaniments for other artists. A “Thought Tran=mD-ion” act by Me.-srs Jeromscn and Hutchens (Palmerston North) was outstandingly good. Further enjoyable items were rendered by Mr A. Banner (song), Air C. AL Stanley (song), and melody novelties by the Lewis Brothers (Kimbolton). A final act, "1 ho Intei peeler,” featuring General Young and Coionel Salter, was greatly enjoyed and had the gathering rocking with merriment. Zest to the proceedings was given by a professional hand led by Air It. Cook, while repealed demands' for selections on the pipes, kindly supplied by Air S. Nicholson, provided a fitting tinaie to a memorable evening. Last Thursday evening (lie Ashhurst euchre players were at home to the Aukautci'u p,avers, who had come in quest of the M hakarongo euelire shield, ot which the Ashhurst players arc the holders. The games had not been commenced very long before it was evident that a good contest would result, each team alternately icgistering wins, until Ashhurst gradually advanced ahead, only tor Aokautoro to again draw level, and once more it was game for game until each had registered 60 games, when Ashhurst again forged ahead and maintained-a flight lead to win by 73 games lo 70. This k the first time this season that the holders have been succeesful in retaining possession of the shield. At the conclusion of the garnets the captain of Aokautere (Air W. R. Hopcroft) congratulated the Ashhurst team on their win, and thanked them for the epiendid evening’s entertainment. Air l’aten (AHiurst captain) in reply thanked the Aokautere play els for coming over, and wished them better luck next time. Supper was served bv the committee and lady helpers, aftei which the dance floor was cleared and dancing enjoyed till midnight, Mrs It. Hewctt officiating at the piano, whne Air I. i’aton acted as ALU. The third shoot of the Ashhunst Defence Rifle Club's service championship for the Alcwett Cup was fired on the local range, over 200 and 300 yards, bust Saturday. 'J lie weather remained lino hut cold, with a changing front wind and-dull light. Wind allowances needed caretul watching and proved fairly hard on occlusions with the open sights. Several good scores were registered, the main being by I. (Jrr and H. Barlow, 33 each, and J. Searle 32, all at 200 yards. The most outstanding score ol the day was 34 by 1L A. Jones at 300 yards, AI. Hausmaun being next with a 31 Highest scores off tlie rifle wore 62 by Jones and 1. Orr and 61 by Huuninanii. Detailed scores: R. Doreen, 2^7 —24—14 —65; C.
