WIRE ROPE COSTS.
BRITISH AND FOREIGN. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 17. A proposal to purchase wire rope from Germany resulted in considerable discussion at a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board, when tendeis from various firms came under consideration. It was pointed out that toi the auantity of wire rope required by the board a tender of £428 was submitted by an Auckland firm for wire rope manufactured by a German firm, while the price quoted in tenders received from 11 British firms was £olf in every case. . After several members had spoken against any policy of buying German wire in preference to British, Mr J. B Donald said be-certainly favoured the purchase of British goods by the board but thfire was another aspect to be' considered. It was quite apparent from the fact that nil the firms selling British wire bad submitted one price that there was a pool in existence When these monopolies w»reformed by British manufacturers and prices were submitted that could by no means compete with foreign, then the British manufacturer was not deserving of the board’s business. Hon. T. Bloodworth. M.L.G., said that while it wa3 most desirable to purchase British goods in preference to others the board must consider the fact that British tenders were considerably higher than the lowest submitted. He favoured the suggestion that the matter be deferred in order that board members might have an opportunity of hearing more about German wire “and the conditions under winch ft was manufactured. . ' . It was decided to defer consideration of the tenders until the next meeting of the board in committee.
