PEACE MOVE

ANSWERS TO LEAGUE.

WARRING POWERS. I REPLIES IN AFFIRMATIVE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received March 18, 11.12 a.m. RUGBY, March 17. It is announced, that the Committee of Thirteen of the Council of the League will meet in London to-morrow to consider the replies of Italy and Abyssinia to its appeal for the immediate opening of peace negotiations. Both replies are in the affirmative in principle. PEACE NEGOTIATIONS. ONLY THROUGH LEAGUE. ABYSSINIAN FIRMNESS. LONDON, March 16. A Paris message states that Abyssinia refuses direct negotiations with Italy, and insists that any peace pourparlers take place through the League, from which she expects full help without delay under Article 16 of the Covenant.

The Ethiopian legation inists that Abyssinian fighting power and resistance are as strong as ever, and declares that the recent Italian communiques were issued coincidentally with League meetings in order to induce the world to believe that further help for Abyssinia was useless. Peace is impossible while Italy occupies a foot of Abyssinian territory. Addis Ababa reports heavy fighting north of Scelicot and Antalo, where an attempt is being made to encircle Italian troops. There were heavy casualties on both sides. The Italian advance is stated to have been so reckless that communications are exposed to Abyssinian raiders.
