CANDIDATES FOR ASHHURST. FIN AIL GALLOPS EXECUTED. (By “Binocular.”) Brilliant weather was offering for training operations at Awapuni this morning, when t.hc majority of this centre’s candidates for the Ashhurst .meeting were accorded fast work. The flags were in the centre of the course proper and, with the track having dried up appreciably, the times wore much faster than for several days past. All the Trcnthnm contingent had departed for Trcnthnm yesterday _ morning and to-day’s activities were restricted to t hose who will be competing at Ashhurst, the local team numbering 19. Of the number six figure \in the hurdle event, but Kitty Quinn can he considered to be a doulitful starter in view of a leg injury ro drived when galloping last week. Muggins, who is down to contest the Novice Stakes, had his trainer (J. Kelly) in the saddle when lie ran throe furlongs in the satisfactory time of 38 2-sscc. The turning nature of the Ashhurst course may not suit, the big Lackham gelding. La Crown (Fcascy) and Dungarvan (R. Rood) were sprinted over five furlongs, running the first two in 25 4-sscc and the full distance in 1.5 2-5. Dungarvan appeared to be doing it the better just short ot the post, but his rider stopped riding him and La Crown got up to head him off on the post. Fcascy, who is apprenticed to W and L. A. Pino, will ride the mare. Dungarvan, however, is not duo to race again in public till the Wanganui meeting. The tw,o hurdlers, VViddon (B. Brown) and Treasure Hunt (Reed) were partners over seven furlongs. They jumped away smartly to run the first two furlongs in 2&scc, four in 51 2-sscc, and the full distance in 1.33 2-5. Widden is a beau tifully-brcd gelding, being by Penncn, but he requires racing. Treasure Hunt has something still to learn in the hurdling role, although he displayed an improvement on a round of the fences yesterday. Martial Lady (Reed) and Barley Almond (S. Anderson) had a great set to in the run home after Martial Lady had held tho advantage in the early stages, crossing the lino locked togchcr. They ran the five furlongs in a tick better than 1.5. Ruenzori (A. McDonald) and Tiger Bill (Thomas), who will represent Mrs A. W. McDonald's stable in tho hurdle event, registered quite a good effort ITy running the first three furlongs of a six furlongs task in 32sec and the full distance in 1.20 1-5. The former promises to bo tho more prominent in the actual race, but the chestnut has still to prove that he can stay. Their riders' of this morning will he in the saddle to-morrow. Bazainc (Reed), who claims but the one engagement at *.shhurst—in the hack scurry—ran a coniioHable half-mile in 52 sec, after taking 14sce for the initial furlong. Ho has been awarded the steadier of 9.9, and the chestnut will not have the services of R. Reed to-morrow, P. Burgess having the mount in die former’s absence.

Happy Hunting (Anderson) had the measure cf Discoursivc (Reed) at the close of a half-mile task in 52 2-ssec. Happy Hunting claims two engagements—in the hack six and in the scurry —and she may take her place in both, although as an alternative programme the Hunting Song mare may have one outing and then go on to Trentham. Lackston (Pine) and Taumau (Chisholm) ran half a mile in 52sec. The former secured the better of the jump-out and he was still holding an advantage of three-quarters of a length at the post. Forest Glow (Pine) jumped away at the seven furlongs post to run his first t\vO furlongs in 26sec. He picked up Tail Light, L. Knapp’s new addition, just beyond the half-mile post and the latter beat him home by half a length. The full distance occupied 1.34.

Gold Cure (A. McDonald), who will contest the open seven furlongs event in preference to the hurdies, was worked on the plough and the Gold Soult gelding strode 'along very freely on this track, which had made an excellent recovery.

Kilig’s Lancer (L. Parkes) was schooled over the hurdles, the Grcyspear gelding going at his fences in a mannor which indicated that he has some knowledge of the art. In all probability he will now be spelled till he enters upon the jumping role in earnest.

RIDERS AT ASHHURST. Additional riding engagements for the Ashhurst meeting are: — L. Leach—Pladie. J. Chaplin.—Discoursive. R. J. Mackic —Royal Routine. C. Broughton.—Treasure Hunt. R. Chisholm —Martial Lady. C. P. Shield —Aga Khan, Bumble. E. A. Kcesing—Count Willonyx, Do Trop, Sanguine King. S. Tremaine. —Warehi, Lavina, Donegal, Wvndalc, Lackston. The only official scratching announced is that of Laconic in the Hack Cup. There appears to bo some doubt as to which race Sanguine King will, start in and he may forego the Cup race for the Raumai Handicap. The Ashhurst track is reported to have greatly benefited by the. rain and it should offer the best of galloping conditions tomorrow. • -
