GERMANY SNUBBED

SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE. IDENTITY WITH HAPSBURGS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telogra p h. —Copy right.) Received January 21, 8.50 a.in. VIENNA, Jan. 20. Dr Kurt Schuschnigg and Prince Starhemberg (Chancellor and ViceChancellor) administered an undisguised snub to Germany in the course of speeches at a national rally of officials of the Patriotic Front, which was a spectacular and impressive demonstration.

Prince Starlicmherg declared that Austria was fighting all plans Tor an Anschluss, adding: We would never agree to become a province ol Greater Prussia and intend to remain independent and free. Austrian history is inseparable from the Hapsburgs and Austria is inseparable from the Hapsburgs. We can all conceive the moment when Austria and the Hapsburgs will again become identical to the advantage of Austria and Europe. Prince Starhemberg denied reports that he was seeking to obtain the Austrian Throne for himself or aspired to act as Regent. Dr Schuschnigg, speaking alter Prince Starhemberg, made a veiled attack on the Nazi propaganda and declared that authority never meant tyranny in Austria. EUROPEAN REACTIONS.

Paris official circles welcome the speeches as indicating a weakening of the Nazi influence. Rome says it is understood that Italy favours the restoration of the Hapsburgs so as to strengthen the opposition to the Anschluss. Yugoslavia and Hungary are angry. They consider the speeches a deliberate attempt to increase the political tension. Ozecho-Slovakia welcomes the reference to Germany, but is perturbed at the prospect of the Hapsburgs’ restoration.
