DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 11. The Dannevirke Hospital Board met to-day, Mr L. Stein presiding. A circular letter was read from Mr L. O. Hooker, Hawera, in reference to this year’s health stamp campaign, seeking the board’s support thereto. The chairman suggested that the board purchase a quantity of stamps, say, £5 worth. This was carried unanimously. The matron (Miss Brown), in her report, stated that the month had been a busy one. At present the children’s ward was qujet, but the other wards were full. Sister Pringle had returned from Wellington, where she received valuable instruction in special dietetics, this course having met with the approval of the Health Department. It was decided to make a donation of £3 3s to the nurses’ memorial fund. The medical superintendent (Dr. W. Beedie) reported that there were at present in hospital GO patients—22 women, 30 men, 13 children and one case of scarlet fever. The engineer (Mr G. Freeman) reported that the fuel account for the month was £73 5s 3d. The Government inspector had inspected the boilers and plant, everything being in order. The Dannevirke branch of the Plunket Society met yesterday, Mrs H. Cowper presiding. A vote of thanks was passed to the Tipapakuku Women’s Institute, which donated £2 19s, proceeds of a dance. .Following is the report lor August of the Plimket Nurse (Sister Hogwood):—Cases on register, 304, plus 119 older children; new cases, 13, plus 3 casuals; visits to homes, 120 and to out-stations 14 ; adults to office, 304; babies to office, 203; older children, 129; total, 030. Visits paid to surrounding districts: Makirikiki 3, Tipapakuku 3, Te liehunga 1, Piri Piri 1, Umutaoroa 1. The annual convention ol the Hawke’s Bay district of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held yesterday afternoon in the Dannevirke Methodist schoolroom. The president (Mrs J. Wilson, of Hastings) occupied the chair, and amongst the manv ladies present from other districts was Miss A. M. McLay, the Dominion organiser. Officers for the year were elected as follow: —President, Mrs J. Wilson; vice-president, Mrs R. Lewis (Napier); secretary, Mrs W. Webb (Havelock North); treasurer, Miss G. Smaies (Waipulcurau). The treasurer’s report, which was adopted, disclosed a credit balance of £4 13s 4d.
Rotarian E. N. Hogben, M.A., delivered an address to the Dannevirke Rotary Club at its luncheon yesterday on “Abyssinia,” the subject being dealt with historically and otherwise. The speaker devoted part of his address to the present Italo-Abyssinian crisis. Each member was provided with a map in order that the speaker’s remarks could he followed fully.
Last evening the Knox Pinfj Pong Club held their final tournament for the season. The programme took the form of a Yankee tournament, and the winners were: —Ladies, Miss H. Thompson; men, T. Chapman. Visitors were present from the Ruahine Club. The third term at the North School opened with one change in the teaching staff. Miss O. Irwin replacing Mr J. Chadwick, who has gone to Gisborne. At the South School Miss A. Greenway replaced Miss L. A. Millett, who is relieving at the Makotuku School. The roll at the Dannevirke South School is at present 360, nine new pupils having been enrolled lor the third term, and tlve North School roll is 407, 17 new pupils having been admitted. Mr and Mrs A. J. Simpson returned to Daunevirke this morning, after spending a holiday at Hastings with Mrs H. Allen.
