(From Our Own Correspondent.) EKETAHUNA, Sept. 4. Mr 0. 11. Jarvis, of the Post Office exchange staff, has received notice oi transfer to Masterton and leaves in the near future. His position here will be filled by Mr Taylor from Taihapo. Trevor Nation has joined the staff as messenger. Mr and Mrs J. S. Clarke have returned from a month’s holiday spent in Auckland and the King Country. Miss E. Breitmeyer, A.T.C.L., is on holiday visiting Wellington. General regret is expressed at the early departure of Air V. Parsons, headmaster of the E.D.H.S. Mr Parsons commences duties at the Napier Central School on September 9. Mrs Parsons will not leave until a later date.
Airs P. A. Petersen, eenr., celebrated her 81st birthday on Tuesday. This lady is one of the surviving early settlers, having been resident in tho district for 43 years, 30 of these having spent in her present home in Stanley Street. She is much loved and respected by all members of tlie community arid was the recipient of numerous congratulatory telegrams and gilts, including several beautiful floral tributes. A finally gathering nas held in the evening, among those present being Mr and Airs Fulton and family, of Kohinui, Air and Airs P. Jensen and family, and Mr and Airs P. A. l’eterscn, junr. the many iriends of Aire Petersen will bo pleased to know she is still very active and enjoys good health.
A boisterous southerly accompanied at intervals by heavy hail and snow made outside conditions very unpleasant through the week-end. The adjacent hills were covered with a blanket of white, but very litt.e snow lay in the borough. The weather at present is etill very cold and unsettled. Aire S. O'Regan, assisted by her daughters, Aliases Alo.ly and Peggy, was hostess at a euchre party held on Monday evening in aid of the funds of the Catholic Church. Considering the wintry conditions the attendance was good and some exciting games resulted. A dainty home-made supper of savouries and sweets was much enjoyed. Alesdames J. Spring and AV. AVatts tied for the ladies’ prize, the latter eventually proving the winner, while Alessns J. Spring and E. Regan tied for the gentlemen’s prize, the iormer winning. A competition lor a handsome trophy was won oy Aiaster Sid Chapman, of Lower Ilutt. For tho benefit ot one of their comrades, who is at present, an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital, the staff of the County Council are staging a “burlesque wheelbarrow” race on Saturday afternoon, from tho Alunicipal Buildings to the Sportsground, a distance of approximately one mile. An amusing and exciting contest is expected as seven teams will participate and are as follow: —Borough team, the Mayor, Air W. Simpson (B. AViliis pusher); Power Hoard, Cr P. Davies (S. McDonald); East Riding, Air J. B. Carruthcrs, chairman County Council (A. Ramsay); AS est Riding, (Jr Uuphant (T. Parish); Atlrcdion liid.ng, (Jr Kebble (A. Caulton); Parkville, Air Mackv, county engineer (G. AVatson); Alastertori, J. C. D. AJackley, county c,erk (pusher not yet nominated). Upon arrival at the Sportsground a lootba.l match between representatives of the AJasterton County Council and Eketahuna County Council will take place, the trophy at stake being the (Jrcathcad cha.lenge Shield.
