Although he did not fill a place in the. Tirnaru to Christchurch road cycle race, 11. Henderson (Palmerston North) had been selected as a member of the New Zealand team to compete in the GoulburnSydney and AVarrnmbool-Mclbourno. races. A great fire had swept a portion of Adrianople, 7000 houses being burned and the Post Office, the Mosques, and the Greek, Armenian, Bulgarian and Jewish quarters destroyed. A committee formed of three members of the Sluggish River Drainage Board and three of the Horseshoe Drainago Board had been set up to bring to finality tlie amalgamation of the two bodies. A boxing match between G. Williams (champion lightweight of Australia) and S. Thomas (holder of several New Zealand championships) had been held at the Orient Hall at Palmerston North, and at the close of the bout it was stated that it was hoped to form a local branch of the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Association. Mr J. Louisson made the announcement. The prevalence of potato blight had forced the price of potatoes up to 2d per lb and it appeared that that figure would remain stable for some time. The Pacific Cable Company’s year had closed with a deficit of £76,000, of which Now Zealand’s share was £BSOO.
