Residents of the Henley district (says the Otago Daily Times) were greatly sui'prised to witness a' large white seal disporting itself in the swollen waters of the Taieri River. The marine visitor, although about 12 miles from the sea, appeared to be perfectly at home, and did not seem to have any tear of the numerous spectators who approached it. the seal made its way on to the bank, when it was seen to be about nine feet in length. The making good of the damage caused by the hurricane six months ago has been very resolutely faced in Rarotonga, and things are now practically back to normal, said Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., of Feilding, who returned to Wlellington yesterday after a short visit to the island. Judge Avson, the resident commissioner, had evidently had a fairly strenuous time, he said. From the very happy natures of the natives it was clear that the islanders were enjoying their usual conditions of life once more. An interesting exhibition of clocks of many periods was held last month at the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, London. It showed the changes in clocks from 1910 to 1935, and there was also a group of models of clocks from the earliest times—the water clocks of ancient Egypt, the candle clock of Alfred the Great’s day, the oil clock of German peasants of the eighteenth century, and other old methods of telling the time devised with great ingenuity. A group of unusual and fantastic modern clocks, shown for the first time in England, was included :ri the exhibition.
