MANAWATU COUNTY

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual smoke concert of the employees and staff of the Manawatu County Council was held in the Town Hall, Sandon, on Saturday evening. Among those present were the chairman Or W. E. Barber, Councillors J. H. Perrett, A. N. Alorcom, J. Boyce D. AV. Refd, apologies being received from Messrs AV. E. Pearce and J. H. McKelvie. The visitors included Messrs A. Hopwood AV. H. Cadwallader, A. H. Bogle, L. kpairow, A. Trenkner, F. Foster, AV. Davis, B. Reed, R. R. Lind and A\ . Locke. . Much appreciated items were rendered the following assisting: Messrs J. Currie, S. L. Kent, E. N. Butler, R. R. Lind, L. Sparrow, H. V. Bond, and AV. H. Cadwallader. The following toast-list was honoured: “I he King,” “Chairman and Councillors “Kindred Local Bodies” and lhe Visitors.” , , . Responding to the toast Chairman and Councillors,” which was proposed hv the county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew) the chairmap, Cr. Barber, thanked tile committee responsible for tlie arrangements for the invitation extended to him to be present. Cr. Barber considered such functions a splendid tiling in the interests of the employees and council. “It brings us together, and to-niglit we are one, said Cr. Barber. Continuing, he said he had lived in the Manawatu County for 45 years for 30 of winch he had been a councillor, and nad seen much happen. He had never thought in his early days that he would be a representative of the Manawatu County. The county in the early days was in a very rough state and it was a big effort to set out and attend a council meeting. During his period he had seen wonderful improvements and hoped these would continue. “The county has always held its own, said Cr. Barber. This he considered was in a large part due to the assistance of the council’s employees. In concluding, Cr. Barber expressed his thanks for the manner in which the toast had been received and said he agreed with Mr Drew when the latter said the staff gave the council a fair deal and as long as lie was chairman he would see that the staff was treated likewise. . . Councillors Boyce, Perrett, Reid and Morcom also responded to the toast.
