TELEPHONE TO ENGLAND

The marvels of modern science were demonstrated recently, when Mrs E. J. Mil bur n, an English lady, from her Slimmer home at Taupo, was able to converse l;y telephone for four and a half minutes with her daughter at Gatton, Surrey Hills, England. Although the wireless telephone system has been in existence in New Zealand tor some time now, calls to England are generally made from the main centres and rarely from such remote districts as Taupo. The conversation across the world was clearly a.udible to both parties, and the Post and Telegraph Department was naturally pleased with the success of the call, which had to be routed overland to Wellington and thence by wireless through Sydney to England.
