FORTY YEARS’ SERVICE.

POLICE FORCE WORK. INSPECTOR HARVEY RETIRES. With practically forty years of service to his credit Inspector P. Harvey, who lias been in charge of the Palmerston North police district for over three years, retired to-day, when he was made the recipient of a presentation from his colleagues jn the force. Inspector Harvey, who has reached the age limit for the service, has been granted three months’ special leave from to-day, his actual period of service expiring on February 24 next. Inspector Harvey was transferred from the Permanent Artillery at Wellington to the police force on April 18, 1896, and was stationed as a constable at Auckland. He saw service in that both in the city itself and at a number of places in the district. Subsequently at Christchurch, Cheviot and Kaiapoi, being promoted from the last-named station to the rank of sergeant, proceeding to Auckland, in 1908. From Auckland he went to Wellington and frojn there to Taihape as sergeant in charge of that sub-district, and later to Otaliuhu, where lie held a similar position. In 1920 Mr Harvey was promoted to the position of senior-sergeant in charge of the Dannevirke sub-district. In February, 1926, Mr Harvey reached the grade of sub-inspector and was transferred to Wellington, where he remained for two years, subsequently, taking up the position of in; spector in charge of the Whangarei district. In July, 1931, Inspector Harvey took up tlie position, has held at Palmerston North until his retirement to-day. • Inspector Harvey has made numerous friends since lie took up his duties in. Palmerston North, and they will wish him every happiness in his retirement. He stated to-day that lie had been pleased to have been associated for so long with such a fine body of men as those in tlie New Zealand Police Force. Inspector Harvey is a member of the Manawatu Bowling Club and has found much pleasure on the green. Inspector S. Rawle, the successor to Inspector Harvey, commences Ilia duties at Palmerston North to-morrow.
