HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

SPRING SHOW. A feast of colour and beauty confronted the visitor when the annual Spring Show of the Feilding Horticultural Society was opened in the Drill Hall this afternoon by the Mayoress (Mrs C. E. Taylor). Feilding has long enjoyed a reputation for the beauty of its gardens, while the quality of roses produced locally has earned them wide fame, and it is no exaggeration to say- that all claims were fully substantiated in the splendid showing of blooms which graced the tables in the Drill Hall, to-day.

Favoured by an extremely productive season, local gardens have given their best to chose from, and it was no easy task the judges had in making the placings in the various classes. Blooms of all shades and descriptions had come forward in profusion, and members of the' committee, who have been hard at work recently preparing for the show, were generous in their remarks regarding the support accorded the society. In the general lay-out of the exhibits a new note was struck this year, the tables, instead of being arranged in two long lines down the hall, being placed diagonally from the centre aisle in short lengths. This allowed of a better inspection of the display and also give a decided advantage in x'egard to light. Commercial horticulturalists had given the society good support,_ while in the decorative section the delicately toned exhibitions arranged by several well-known local exhibitors were greatly admired. Eariy indications were that public support would be strong, the attendance this afternoon being very encouraging. The musical items provided at the opening session of the show were greatly appreciated and for to-night, when it is expected the show will attract splendid patronage, a further programme of items has been arranged.
