OBITUARY.
MRS WILLIAM PRIEST. The family, relatives and friends of the late Mrs Annie Priest, wife of Mr AVilliam Priest, suffered a sad shock on Wednesday when it became known that she had passed away with tragic suddness. Mrs Priest had undergone an operation and was preparing to return to her home when she died. She leaves a husband and a family of three sons and three daughters. Born at PukehoU, Hawke’s Bay, 56 y'ears ago, Mrs Priest was the daughter of the late Air and Airs Janies Alavall, early settlers of that district. In 1900, when residing at Eketaliuna, she married Air William Priest, a son of the late Air and Airs S. I. Priest, who had taken up land in the Wairarapa when the Wellington special settlement was allotted for ballot by the Government. Each land owner, in addition to being granted a block of land, was also granted a section in what was intended to be the township of Newman, but with the opening up of the country 7, Eketahuna was deemed preferable and the town of Newman, which was called after Dr Newman, of Wellington, failed to develop. After their marriage Air and Airs Priest took up land at Putara and made their home there for a number of y 7 ears prior to coming to Palmerston North, where Air Priest farmed at Awapuni for a brief period prior to taking up his residence at 240 Main Street. The members of the family are Mrs C. 0. Saunders, of Wellington, Alisses Alabel and Jennie Priest, and Alessrs James, Clarence and Percy Priest, of Palmerston North. The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being laid to rest in the Kelvin Grove cemetery, Rev. A. N. Scotter conducting the service. AIRS CATHERINE CHRISTIAN. A long period of suffering, which was borne with much fortitude, was brought to a close by the death of Airs Catherine Christian, which occurred at her residence, 56 Linton Street, recently. Airs Christian, who had attained her 63rd year, was a daughter of the late Air and Airs James Lawler, of Sydney, and it was not till 1905 that, she came to New Zealand, to be married in the following year to Air Ernest Creasy Christian, at Wellington. For a period following their marriage Air and Mrs Christian resided in Nelson prior to coming to Palmerston North in 1908, and they made this centre their home thereafter. Unfortunately, Airs Christian lost her husband three years ago, and her own health became indifferent, but despite her own sufferings, she won the love and admiration of all who knew her.
9'wo daughters, Alisses Rhoda and Lydia Christian, of Palmerston North, and one son, Air Arthur Christian, of Hastings, are left. One brother, Air Owen Lawler, of Sydney, also survives Airs Christian, one brother having made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. Requiem Alass was held in St. Patrick’s Church for the deceased lady, while a short service was also conducted prior to the cortege proceeding to the Palmerston North Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest alongside those of her husband, Very Rev. Alonsignor AlacAlanus conducting the graveside service.
