FAVOURABLE REPORT.
PETITION BY PALMERSTON
NORTH RESIDENT
(By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 1.
A very favourable report was submitted to the House of Representatives this afternoon on the petition of J. A. Cruickshank, of Palmerston North, a former sergeant in the police force, who petitioned for an annual allowance in consideration of his services. The Public Petitions A. to L. Committee referred the matter to the Government’s “most favourable” consideration, adding their opinion that the petitioner should be granted a compassionate allowance of £3OO. The recommendation was heartily supported by Mr J. A. Nash, who thanked the committee for its decision. The petitioner, lie explained, had the option of joining the superannuation fund, hut as he had an insurance policy with a large premium*, and was a married man with four children, he felt that he could not undergo the further expense of superannuation on a salary of 7s per day which he was then receiving. The matter had been before the House previously, and ho was gla,d to find the committee unanimous in recommending that Mr Cruickshank should receive consideration, with a recommendation that £3OO be paid to him instead of the £9OO which was originally suggested. There were only four other members of the police force in a similar position, and the Police Department was in favour of the £3OO grant, subject to Cabinet’s approval This in itself showed that Sergeant Cruickshank must have had an excellent record, and that he had done good service for his country. The report was supported by several i members, and was adopted. |
