NEWBURY INSTITUTE.

There was a large attendance at the Newbury Hall on Friday evening last, when the Newbury Women’s Institute held their first social and dance. Items were rendered by the following: Miss Z. Leamy, pianoforte; Mrs Davidson, humorous recitations; Miss M. Day, song; Master Bernie Neill, recitations; Harmonica Band ; Miss F. Doherty, song; play reading, Mrs Davidson, and party; Scotch dance, Miss B. Waller; playette, “Rose in Bloom,” T© Arakura Institute; dance, Miss June Scott. After supper had' been served, the president (Mrs W: Hamlin) expressed pleasure at the large attendance and especially thanked the performers and all who had helped to make the evening such a success. The winners of the novelty dances were : Monte Carlo, Miss Wilde and partner; lucky Gav Gordons, Miss J. Cud by and Mr F. Paul. Another competition was won by Mr W. Hamlin and the ball game by Miss M. Paul (ladies), Mr E. Capp (men). The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr W. H. Brown, of Palmerston North. The accQmpanist for the evening was Miss Z. Leamy. Music for the dances was supplied by Mrs Shaw, Messrs P. Collins, Burke, and Miss Prentice.
