TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD.

AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON.

The Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild met in the Empire Hall for its October meeting, yesterday afternoon, when Mrs A. E. Mansford presided over a large attendance. Flowers beautified the stage and also graced the tables which had been placed in the body of the hall with a view to supplying a more home-like effect. Mrs Mansford expressed her gratification at the presence of such a large number and at the interest being displayed in the guild’s activities. Matters of business were transacted, during which it decided that each member should contribute',a cup and saucer towards the guild’s supply of china, and pay threepence each meeting for afternoon tea. The scope of duties of the organisation were detailed by Miss Grant, it being decided to form three circles with the following conveners: Garden, Mrs Hartog; craft, Mrs Renwick; play-reading, Mrs Davidson. Mr P. Black, city curator, gave a most instructive talk on the growing of bulbs and their near relatives. The talk concerned the preparation of soils and planting of tulips, hyacinths, narcissi, crocuses, ranunculi, anemones and gladioli to get the best results, the speaker’s remarks being closely followed. Musical monologues by Miss Cranston, acompanied by Mrs McNeilly at the piano, were appreciated. After afternoon tea further interest was provided by a demonstration of barbola work by Mrs N. V. Ballinger. The demonstrator displayed some fine examples of work which were much admired. Thanks were conveyed to Mrs Ballinger, Miss Cranston and Mr Black by Mrs Mansford. Greetings and congratulations were conveyed to the members from the Napier Townswomen’s Guild, this friendly gesture being warmly applauded. Mesdames F. G. Major and D. Evans were the door hostesses.

The meeting opened with the "Ode to Friendship” and clossed with the National Anthem, Mrs Woodroofe presiding at the piano. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames N. Blackmore, T. R. Moore and L. H. Collinson.
