MILSON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILSON, April 17. At the annual meeting of householders held last evening, the headmaster (Mr M. 11. McEwen) in reviewing the school year stated that the roll number in December was 111 and in February 97. Tho total at present was well over 100. The school staff comprised Miss Jordon and Miss Spurdle, the latter subsequently resigning and her place being filled by Miss Brooker. Miss Duncalf was also appointed as an extra assistant. Thanks to the Terrace End School Committee and to Mr Arthur (the caretaker at the baths) the pupils had gained some valuable tuition in swimming, and several learners’ certificates had been awarded. Two proficiency and five liiesaving certificates had also been awarded, whilst tho school lifesaving team had been instrumental in winning the Herbert Smith Trust Shield. It was satisfactory to note that the school had this year been granted an environment certificate for the first time. In the realm of sport, considerable encouragement was given tho pupils. A midget football team which was entered in the competitions reached the semifinals. The school cricket team also performed well. Basketball was popular, and many young enthusiasts were coached in tennis. The school heating systom which had been tho cause of much complaint in cue oast nad been attended to by the board’s architect and was now functioning correctly. Xne social side of school life was not forgotten, a school ball, picnic and breaking-up ceremony being held. All were well patronised. Facilities in the way of a now sewing machine, coconut matting for the floors, and improvements to the school grounds had been obtained by the committee. After commenting on the prevalence of measles and its disastrous effect on the attendance, Mr McEwen concluded his review by thanking the School Committee and ladies’ committee, Mr and Mrs Murphy, and Mr Franklyn for their help during the year and Messrs Shailer and Son. Bateman, Bovis and the Palmerston Library for donations received.
