SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ BOARD PLEASED. The first meeting of the Palmerston North High Schools’ Board of Governors and tie Technical School Committee since the announcement was made of the new examination for the leaving certificate praised the Goveminent’s decision, in the matter but expressed the wish that the scheme be carried a step further by ascertaining that pupils who remain a further year at school by passing the examination will be granted a higher leaving certificate. , Mr J. Murray, the rector of the Boys’ High School, in Ins report, outlined the scheme appertaining to the examination and stated that m his opinion it was a distinct advance so far as the examination policy was concerned. r Air G G. Hancox, the director of the Technical School, in his report, said the institution of the examination should prove of benefit to postprimary pupils, particularly if _it received the recognition of the University and the professional societies. He recommended that tlie board urge the Minister of Education to include practical mathematics as one of the subMrs M. Rhodes, principal of the Girls’ High School, did not refer to the matter in her report, hut stated that it found favour in her estimation. . , Commenting that it was satisfactory for the board to see tlie institution of the examination, for which it had battled for a considerable time Mr AY. R. Birnie said that to make it really useful to those who were attending for a further year at school these pupils should . have the opportunity to secure a higher leaving certificate. He thought the board might well endorse this principle. Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., who presided eaid the position would be clarified if the board ascertained from the department if it was intended to grant tne higher leaving certificate to the pupils who remained at school tlie extra unanimously agreed to take this course. . . Air Hancox’s suggestion regal cling the inclusion of practical mathematics among the subjects was also given unanimous support.
