WORK ON NO. 60 HIGHWAY.
LARGE EXPENDITURE INVOLVED In commenting upon the cost of completing No. 60 highway, vdiich passes over the Fitzherbert Hill, the engineer (Mr L. C. Pickering) stated at today’s meeting of the Kairanga County Council that to deviate the route at certain points, build the new roadway, purchase the necessary land, erect fences and to tar-seal the route would involve an expenditure of some £30,000. It had been suggested that the work of tar-sealing the flats should be proceeded with, but the Main Highways Board bad objected to this being undertaken, maintaining that to do it piecemeal would prove too costly in respect to mainteance. It was apparent, added the speaker, that the Highways Board had behind their minds the possibility of making the main route via Makerua.
Cr. Jos. Batchelar remarked that it would be impossible to raise a loan under the circumstances.
Cr. P. G. Mildon suggested that the engineer should bring down a report relative to the cost of tar-sealing the Longburn-Rongotea route, the engineer ' stating in reply that he intended bankling the road to a width of 20ft this : year. It was, however, only a secondary road and the Highways Board’s subsidv would be only on the basis of £2 to £l. Cr. R. A. Mercer considered that the time was opportune for the council to undertake the tar-sealing of the Boundary Roar’d to Railway Road route. The work would be undertaken in conjunction with the City Council. The chairman (Cr. D. Collis) said that the whole position could be dealt with when the estimates for the incoming financial year were being considered, and the discussion lapsed.
