SECONDARY SCHOOLS

AIEETING OF COAIMITTEES. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North High Schools’ Board oi Governors and the Technical School Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Air J. A. Nash, M.P., presiding. Also present were Alessrs J. AV. Rutherfurd, A. J. Graham, AV. 1L Birnie, G. Tremaine, M. H. Oram, Airs Al. Rhodes (principal of the Girls’ High School), Air J. Murray (rector of the Boys’ High School), and Air G. G. Hancox (director of the Technical School). Apologies for absence were received from Airs AL Aitchison and Air C. Anderson. The Education Department advised that consideration had favourably been given to the provision of wall blackboards, at a cost of about £l7, for the Technical School. The principal of the Girls’ High School reported that the roll was now 236 and the average attendance 213.59. The attendance had been affected by the prevalence of measles in the town. The school was visited by Dr. E. Gunn, and a test of eyesight earrjed out. Parents of girls with defective eyesight had been notified. Tire grounds were how in excellent condition and the winter sports start this week. The school house chimneys had all been repaired, and the roof attended to. The director of the Technical School, in his report, stated that; Dr. Elizabeth Gunn had visited the school several times to carry out an eyesight survey. The lady teachers had taken the girls for several picnics on Saturday afternoons. In all the summer games the members of the staff had given, generously of their time, In order to assist the equipment fund, a series of regular fortnightly dances had been arranged. The glazing of the bay opposite room 4 had added greatly to the comfort of the main building. So far no authority had been received for the additional heating which should be carried out before the cold weather set in. It was to he regretted that funds were not available for painting doors, window frames, cover boards, etc., which would quickly deteriorate if left much longer. In the interest of sight, the open risers of the dressmaking room stairway should be screened as was done on the other stairway. The boys had been very enthusiastic over cricket and bad made good progress under their conch. In the friendly games that had been arranged they had scored consistently. The rector of the Boys’ High School reported a roll of 388 and an average attendance of 371. Air A. C. Espiner, B.Sc., and Air A. G. A. Baigent, ALA., had commenced duty. Air J. L. Thompson had taken up a C grade position at the Hawera Technical High School. Air AV. P. Anderson and Air C. B. Beatson had been absent through illness. The budget for the expenditure of incidentals capitation would he submitted at the meeting, showing a balance more than sufficient to install the electric lighting as detailed on the estimate of £2l 2s 6d. and the rector recommended that the work be done. AA’lien the plans for the new building came to jiand they would show a line of windows facing to the west to Rangitikoi Street. He was of the opinion that these windows should be protected from the outset with suitable wire-net-ting and recommended that the board furnish authority for communicating with the department on tlie matter. The reports were adopted. It was decided that steps he taken to apply for the wire-netting protection. The hoard resolved that specifications be drawn up for the installation of electric light at the Boys’ High School before taking action on the matter.
