HOSPITAL HOARD RELIED. ALLOCATION OE £4OOO. Aa allocation of £4OOO has been made by the Palmerston North Tiospitul Hoard, tins year, lor outdoor charitable relief. The estimate iast year was £BOOO, but the actual expenditure was H 3849 17s 4d. The expenditure for the preceding year was ±13913 pjs. “With the present demand for relief it is impossible to keep the expenditure much below £4000,” stated the managing-secretary (Mr A. J. Phillipps; to the meeting of the Hospital Hoard, yesterday afternoon, when the estimates were being adopted. “The estimate last year was reduced and it has been exceedingly difficult during the past year to deal adequately with the cases coming forward. The amount to be provided under this item has l>ecu discussed with the members of the social welfare committee and it was unanimously recommended that the provision this year should be £4000.” An allocation of £I7OO has been made also under the heading of charitable relief lor Old People’s Home maintenance. The estimate last year was £1750. the actual expenditure being £lsßl 10s lid. "it is anticipated,” stated the managing-secretary, “that by the end of this financial year the chronic wards at Awapuni will bo completed. For some months during the past year there were several beds vacant in the home, but now the home is practically full again. With all beds occupied, the homo will cost about £I7OO this year. “Old People’s Home expenditure has been reduced, as the following figures show:—l93l-32, £2llO 15s lOd; 1932-33, £lß4l 17s sd; 1933-34, £lsßl 10s lid. Of course, it must be remembered that the numbers for tTrb past year have dropped. At the same time, special credit is due to tho matron of the Old People’s Homo for the way in which she lias co-operat-ed in reducing costs without impairment of efficiency.”
