MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday. Alfred James Plier, aged 29, was charged with the theft, on April 14, of a cycle valued at £4, the property of Betty Lorna Burton. He pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Constable Compton gave evidence that he saw accused coming out of a right-of-way mounted on a ladies’ cycle. Later, when the machine was reported missing, accused was apprehended. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse said that accused had entered the police station earlier in the day and reported that his own cycle was missing. Commenting that cycle thefts had to be stopped, the Magistrate sentenced accused to 14 days’ imprisonment. William Jack Sutton was lined £l, with 3s costs, for driving a motor vehicle in Taonui Street at night without lights. John li. Sass was fined £2, with 10s costs, on a charge of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse said that it was defendant’s second offence.
