LAUNDRY SERVICE

COST TO HOSPITAL. The total cost of the Palmerston North Hospital laundry service during 1933 was £1393 for 552,059 pieces washed, the average number of employees being seven. The cost per dozen of pieces laundered was 7d, equal to that at Hamilton, and lower than a.t Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Napier. The chairman (Mr J. K. Hornblow) intimated, at the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday, that they would probably be called upon to find £IOOO in a year or two to purchase equipment for the laundry. The managing-secretary (Mr A. J. Phillipps) stated that the water softening installation had amply paid for itself, having reduced the soap bill bv two-thirds.
