HOSPITAL LEVY
BURDEN ON THE RATEPAYERS. Reporting to to-day’s meeting of the Kairnnga County Council that the ratepayers would be required to find an increased amount in hospital levy this year, the chairman (Or D. Collis) stated that meantime the old valuation of the county (£4,561,810) remained. Last year the maintenance charge made by the Hospital Board had been £2841 2s 9d, whereas this year it would be £3302 lbs 2d, while the capital levy had been advanced from £l6l 16s Gd to £365 4s lOd, making a difference of £665. The clerk (Mr N. I. Nielsen) said that although the levy had been increased, the county in the year 1928-29 had been required to find £3894 18s lOd. Cr P. G. Miklon asked what the position would bo should the new sustenance scheme bo operated, adding that lie presumd the burden would be still greater. The chairman pointed out that the Palmerston North Hospital Board’s year had been productive of a debit balance, hence the increase in the levy. Cr C. Anderson remarked that he had noticed that the charitable aid account had been overdrawn. Cr M. A. Moody: Yes. Overdrawn by several hundreds. Cr W. G. Shannon: I do not know how the dairy farmer getting 6sd per lb for liis butterfat can stand it. The chairman: It might be comforting to know that comparisons made with institutions of similar size disclose that the Palmerston North Hospital is run at the lowest cost.
