MILSON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Milson School Committee was hold in the schoolroom last evening, Mr F. G. Murphy presiding. Also present wero Messrs Hoskins, Richmond, and Franklyn (secretary). The headmaster (Mr M. R. McEwen) reported the roll number at 105 with an averago attendance of 97. The low average was directly attributable to the prevalence of measles in the district. The school was visited on February 16 by Mr Lange (agricultural 'instructor). On the stli inst. an official visit of inspection was- paid by a party comprising Messrs E. F. Hemingway (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board), G. Boulton (secretary),_ W. If. Swangor (in an advisory capacity) and Colonel Whyte. Tho state of the grounds and buildings was favourably commented on. The now fence across the playground has been completed, but the fence at tho far side of the plantation is in need of attention. Tho school swimming sports wero held at the Terraco End baths on Wednesday last, but owing to tho state of the weather tho programme of events was curtailed. On Wednesday next tho school is to be visited by Misses Kennedy and Blackburn, who are specialists in infant work and. drill. On Thursday and Friday of this week tho school will bo closed to allow tho teachers to attend a class of instruction at the Central School. The Milson School will close for tho Easter vacation on the 29th inst. The committee decided to purchase coir matting for the floor of the infant room, and to havo all drains round' tho school boundary cleaned out prior to winter sotting in. The suggestion that a treadle sowing machine be purchased for the sewing class caused considerable discussion; it was eventually decided to. purchase, one. It was also resolved to obtain an estimate of the cost of completing the asphalting of the inner area of the sehool ground, and it is tho intention c.f tho committee to have this work completed before the winter months. .The secretary was instructed to convoy the thanks of the committee to Messrs Bateman and, H. W. Bovis for generous donations for the school picnic. Accounts amounting to £2 6s 9d were passed for payment.
