SCHOOL COMMITTEES

HOKOWHITU SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the HokoTvhitu School Committee was held last evening, Mr P. V. Burns presiding. Also present were Messrs J. B. Fleck, H. W. Cos, C. K. Lane, G. Richardson, H. Medway, and W. E. Cooper (secretary). There was an apology tor the absence of Mr L. G. Gill. Court Manawatu, A.0.0.F., wrote expressing thanks for the loan of crockery for the , recent triennial meeting. —Received. The headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) reported an average attendance of 287 and a roll of 311. During the month the school had been visited by Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, the medical officer of health, and Mr E. H. Lange, the agricultural superviser. Mr E. Hemingway, the chairman of the Education Board, and Mr G. N. Boulton, the secretary, with Mr W. H. Swanfer, the former secretary, Colonel J. Whyte, and Mr W. E. Cooper, had visited the school and inspected its environs. The school would be closed on the loth and 16th inst. to enable a short course in handwork and drill at Palmerston North. The earthquake damage was confined to a burst tank and a damaged chimney,— Adopted. The chairman reported that, the tank had ben repaired and the chimney dismantled. The baths custodian (Mr H. A. Spencer) reported that the takings amounted to £54 19s 2d up to March 11. Last week’s receipts amounted to only 4s owing to the cold temperatures and the pool was not emptied. The earthquake had been responsible for the appearance of a few minor cracks. A padlock was required on the inside of the front gate to stop persons obtaining free swiins. There was a good display of blooms and the lawns were generally in good order.—Adopted. Mr Fleck reported that the debit bank balance had been reduced to £9 14s. Accounts amounting to £2 9s Id were passed for payment. It was decided to write congratulating the Garrison Band on its championship success. The balance-sheet of the recent picric showed a credit balance of a few shillings. A motion of appreciation was accord-

ed Mr Plank and his staff for their excellent work in connection with the picnic. Messrs Yortt and Medway were appointed the visiting committee for the ensuing period. COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening, Colonel J. H. Whyte presiding. Others present were Messrs F. Tucker, W. F. Cutler and E. Persson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. D. Worboys and C. L. Turnbul. The headmaster (Mr W. A. Swinbourn) reported that the roll number, which had been as low as 454 lately, was now 469, and the average attendance last week was 392.8. The unseasonable weather, measles and other sickness had jointly reduced the attendance. The gala day and sports eventuated on February 28, and, favoured by good weather and a good attendance of pa.rents, proved a great success. •Messrs Hemingway (chairman) and Boulton (secretary) of the Education Board, visited the school. Officers of the Public Works Department had recently recharged the fire extinguisher. Schools would be closed on Thursday and Friday next, when the teachers would be attending a refresher course at the Central School. The swimming sports would be held in the municipal baths on Thursday. Mr Savage, the Education Department’s architect, had visited the school that afternoon. —The report was adopted. It was reported that funds were urgently required for the purchase of ra.ttan and other handwork materials for the special class. The committee decided to make a grant of £3 for this purpose. Towels were stated to he required for school use, and Mr Cutler suggested that for such requirements committees should call tenders and buy cooperatively each year. An expenditure of £2 on this item was approved. The matter of the provision of classroom clocks wa.4 held over, being left in the hands of the chairman. The headmaster said a new clock supplied with the new building had ticked a few times, but had not functioned since.
