George Abbot, aged 19, was killed by lightning and his four companions were severely burned while sheltering under a tree at Stawell from a severe storm which swept most of the State, causing widespread damage and floods. Tasmanian passengers on the air liners were unable to cross Bass Strait owing to poor visibility and high winds.

Two fishermen who have been missing since Tuesday are feared to have been lost.
