CHICAGO CLUB TOURNAMENT QUIST BEATS GLEDTIILL. McGrath eliminated. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 13, 10.15 a.m. CHICAGO, Sept. 12. In the Onwentsia Tennis Club tourney Quist (Australia) beat Gledhill (United States), 3 —6, 6—2, 6—3, and Parker (United States) beat McGrath (Australia), 6—4, 6—2. In the doubles Crawford and McGrath (Australia) beat Parker and Shields (U.S.). 6-8, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Glcdnill went into a 3 —2 lead in the first set of liis match against Quist. The Australian evened the score, hut the American took the next three games, finishing, the last one on with a clean-cut placement in Quist s forehand court. In the second set Gledliill won only the third and fourth games, Quist using a fairly effective change of pace and mixing his top spin drives with undercut strokes which repeatedly caught Gledliill off his balance. In the third set Gledliill tired and Quist quickly ran up a 4 —l advantage which ho increased to 5 —3, and finished off the set and the match in the ninth game, forcing the American to chase from corner to corner for liis well directed deep drives. McGRATH FAILS BADLY. Playing Parker (U.S.) McGrath (Australia) took a 3-0 lead in the first set. Parker was aggressive but erratic. He steadied to win the next three games. McGrath’s backhand was carrying little power. Parker won the set after the games had stood 4—4.
After dropping the opening game in the second sot Parker took full control, baffling the Australian with a steady barrage of forehand and backhand drives and sliced shots. After drawing away into a 4—l lead, ho was checked momentarily as McGrath, won the next game, but he came right back to win the set and the match. -
CLEVER DOUBLES PLAY
Crawford and McGrath started impressively, quickly taking a 4—o lead in the first set against Parker and Shields. Then the latter won five straight games. The Australians managed to regain the advantage, winning two straight games. Then the Americans, having broken McGrath’s service, evened the games. They won the next on Parker’s service and. clinched the set in the fourteenth game by breaking through Crawford’s service.
In the second set the Australians were able to handle their opponents’ smashing play, and the' long rallies repeatedly ended in American errors. They won a 6—4 victory and evened tlie match. In the third set Crawford’s strokes began working to perfection. The Australians repeated their 6—4 victory. In the fourth set Crawford and McGrath took the offensive, going to the net repeatedly and forcing Parker and Shields to resort to lobbing which the Australians handled with powerful overhead smashes. They took the final set, 6—3.
PERRY’S CLIMATIC WIN
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 11. F. J. Perry’s defeat of J. B. Crawford in the final of the United States lawn tennis singles championship makes a climax to a successful year for English lawn tennis, in which the Davis Cup has been won back after 21 years. It is thirty years since tlie American championship was won by an Englishman, when H. L. Doherty captured it.

SYDNEY, Sept. 12
The Australian Lawn Tennis Association has cabled J. B. Crawford stating that, while deeply appreciating liis wonderful tennis successes, it urges him, unless he is thoroughly physically fit, to decline to participate in the Chicago contests.
