SMALL FARMS SCHEME.
GOVERNMENT ACTIVE. WELLINGTON, May 8. Efforts being made by the Government to push ahead with land settlement under the small farms scheme for the relief of unemployment were outlined by the Minister of Lands, Hon. E. A. Ransom, in an interview on Saturday. The procedure to be followed by people applying for holdings under this scheme was also explained briefly by Mr Ransom, who said that in view of the limited Crown land available the success of the scheme would largely depend on the amount of private land that could be acquired on lease with right of purchase on reasonable terms. Mr Ransom stated that the Government was very anxious to expedite the settlement of unemployed men under the Small Farms (Relief of Unemployment) Act of last session, and every effort was being made in that direction. The Small Farms Board, had been set up, and the board’s first duty was to set up local committees to assist it in the administration of the scheme. Such committees would be appointed at an early date. Attention had also to be given to the necessary regulations, forms, etc., a.nd the establishment of the organisation, all of which were -well under way. .
