PIONEER OF PEACE.

TRIBUTE TO LORD CECIL. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Dec. 6. In the absence of the Prime Minister. Mr Stanley Baldwin last night unveiled in the great hall of University College a portrait of Lord Cecil painted by Philip de Laszao. The portrait has been presented to Lord Cecil as a tribute to his services to the cause of international co-operation and goodwill, and may eventually become n public posses, sion in the National Portrait Gallery, A replica has been made for acceptance by the League of Nations. A fine tribute to Lord Cecil’s work as a pioneer of peace was paid in a letter from the Prime Minister. Mr Baldwin said that in Lord Cecil there was a curious mixture of the - knigljt and the priest, and he remarked ■ that if they placed a cowl round the i face of the portrait they would have a 1 Savonarola. Lord Cecil had been a great ! idealist and a man of ideals was bound ; to clash at times with those who were engaged in what, for want of a_ better term, were called practical politics, but speaking for those who might be called practical politicians he said that no one had ever questioned the depth and purity and sincerity of Lord Cecil’s mo. tives. The National Portrait Gallery was the natural destination for the pot'* trait of a man who was at the same time a great Englishman, a great Euro, pean, and a great" citizen of the world*
