TO REVOLUTIONISE TRAVEL
CLAIM F.OR NEW ENGINE. LONDON, Nov. 22. The Daily Mail says that in order to inspect oil-electric Diesel-engined locomotives capable of drawing trains with 900 pasengers at 70 miles an hour, the President of the Board of Trade, Mr W. ltunciman, visited Arm-strong-Whitworth’s works at New-castle-on-Tyne, and will report on the prospects to the Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay MacDonald. It is claimed that the installation of the engines, which are also applicable to manufacturing, will revolutionise travel and save the railway companies £22,000,000 a year. The locomotives, four of which have been ordered for the Buenos Aires railways, resemble huge aluminium boxes. The driver behind plateglass windows easily controls 1700 horse power, pressing a self-starter and pulling a level. The fuel cost is eightpence an hour. The engines can be utilised day ;/ul night continuously. One was tested for six months. It ran 25,000 miles, and was worked 17 hours a day. The total fuel and lubricating cost was £B7.
