ROAD CLASSIFICATION

LOCAL BODIES’ ACTION. Tlie question of the classification of county highways for heavy traffic purposes arose at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, when the engineer (J\lr H. V. Bond) reported that no action had as yet been taken by himself in the matter for the reason that uniformity on the subject among the neighbouring local bodies was at first necessary. There was no use, Mr Bond said, in the Manawatu County Council classifying a road in a certain class while a contiguous county through which the road ran put the same road under a different regulation. The county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew) stated that it was his intention to call a meeting of representatives of the counties concerned in the traffic group early in November and the classifica-

tion question could be discussed at this meeting. The acting chairman (Cr J. H. Perrett) agreed that these arrangements would serve very well, it being then decided, on the motion of Crs Reid and Pearce, to call a conference of representatives of the adjoining counties, to be held at bedding, early in November, to consider the question of uniformity in the classification of roads. In addition to the five counties concerned in the group traffic control system, it was decided to invite the Rangitikei and Horowhenua County Councils to send delegates to discuss road classification.
