REFUSAL OF BAIL.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 11. A decision not to allow George Frederick Hewer, aged 39, medical practitioner, his liberty <yn bail pending the hearing of charges of unlawfully using an instrument and homicide was made by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. When 'Hewer was placed in the dock Mr Singer, his counsel, said that the Magistrate announced yesterday that he would consider the application for bail and give his decision to-day. Mr Hunt: I have decided to refuse bail in this case. I can use my own discretion in the matter. Mr Hubble, of the Crown Solicitor’s Office, who appeared for the police, said that he would strongly oppose bail being allowed Hewer. Mr Hunt: My decision does not prevent you from applying to the Supreme Court for bail. Mr Singer: Yes, I know. I don’t know whether your Worship has fully considered the matter of bail. I have looked into the authorities on similar cases, and the last reported case was as far back as 1848, in England—B4 years ago. The Magistrate was adamant and again refused the application. Mr Hubble then obtained a remand in both cases until Monday next, when the charges will come on for hearing.
