SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENTS,

SECONDARY FIXTURE

Fine weather prevailed for the opening of tho North Island secondary schools soccer tourney, which commenced yesterday morning on Cook’s Gardens, W’anganui. The ground was in perfect order, and a number of interested spectators were present during the day. The tourney opened with a junior match between teams representing the two main centres, Wellington and Auckland. Auckland proved the winner by 2 goals to 1. Tho second ga.lllo was between Manawatu and Wanganui junior teams, Wanganui winning by 3 goals to 0. Tho seniors took tho field in the afternoon, Auckland were much heavier than their Wanganui opponents, and outplayed them all round, and tho samo remarks apply to tho Wellington-Manawatu match. Results were as follow: Senior.—Auckland 5 beat Wanganui 1; Wellington 7 boat Manawatu 1. Junior. —Auckland 2 beat Wellington 1; Wanganui 3 beat Manawatu 0. PRIMARY MATCHES. Tlio North Island primary schools soccer tournament, at Wellington, although one match remains to be played, has been won by the Wellington team, and they will hold Hie Webster Shield for the coining year, They won all three games against Waikato, Manawatu and Wanganui. There is a strong feeling, however, that had Wanganui met Wellington later in the competition instead of on the first daj r , the result might have been different. Waikato and Manawatu wore to play the final game at the Basin Reserve this morning. Manawatu, in meeting Wanganui, laboured under a similar handicap, to Waikato, in having some players who were on the small side. They had the advantage of the wind, and this helped them to hold the Wanganui team to some extent. Cudby, at right-half, was the shining light of tho Wanganui team, and sent a fine pass which enabled Goldring to open the score. Brandon scored agpin just before the intervlai, kicking the ball between tlio goalie’s legs after lie had partially saved. Tho second spell saw a rout of the Manawatu team, who seldom got to close quarters with tho opposing defence. Neither the goalie, nor the backs could get the ball far upheld against tho wind with the result that the clover Wanganui halves soon sent it up among tho forwards again, ancl the Manawatu defence had a° sorry time. It was a procession of goals. Vernon scoring three, Scott two, and Bolton one, giving Wanganui a victory by B—o.
