The mouCiiy meeting of the Kiwiten County Council was Held at Kimhnlton yesterday, Cr. McLean presiding. Also present were Crs. Tnppiti, Hair. Shannon. Wood. Shaw, Stack. Brown and Williamson. CORRESPONDENCE.

From the Takapuna Borough Council. requesting this council s support ot its protest against the action oj the Government m not availing itsclt of the provisions of the New South i Wales interest Reduction Act.—Ktjeeived, no action being taken, j b roin the Kairanga County Council. forwarding a cheque tor £23< -s 5 L being this council’s share of the heavy traffic license lees collected tor the quarter ended June 30. Received. . I From tli-3 Commissioner ot Jrans- ; port, advising that representations had been made to the Government ithat heavy motor vehicles owned b\ farmers and used solely tor the transport of the individual farmer s produce and supplies lie exempted tioin | the payment of heavy traffic Ices, and requesting to be advised of the councils views on the subject. 'I he council was not in favour ot any alteration in the existing regulations and decided to oppose any. exemptions. From the Public Works Department. advising that owing to ino lack of sufficient funds, it had been found necessary by the Main Highways Board to reduce some of the amounts asked for by local authoiities on the maintenance estimates tor the current vear. —Received. From Mr K. H. Haytirorne, requesting permission to plant poplar trees along tlie boundary of his property fronting Otamakapua Road. Granted. .. From the trustee, estate of late .ur C. F. W. Hammond, requesting permission to re-erect a boundary fence closer to the formation fronting the projierty on the Peka Road.- Granted, subject to the usual conditions. From the Pohangina County Council, requesting this council to carry out some patching work on the road leading to tiie ford at To Awa.—Referred to the overseer for attention. RATE STATEMENT.

Mr W. L. Hesseltine, the clerk, reported on the county rates as under: General, 1932-1933: Struck, £8572 4s 9d: paid, £338 13s 8d; outstanding to date. £BIB3 11s Id. Arrears <3 rears): Outstanding at April I, £2094 14s 2d; paid, £270 17s 2d; outstanding to date, £1823 17s. Specials, 1932-1933; Struck, £2635 4s 9d; paid and thirds, £199 12s 2d; outstanding to date, £2435 12s 7d. Arrears (3 vears) : Outstanding at April 1, 1932, £1573 9s 9d ; paid, £63 7s sd; outstanding to date, £5lO 2s Id. Summary ol arrears: General, £1823 17s; specials, £5lO 2s 4d ; total, £2333 19s 4d. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Mr F. H. Eggers, overseer for the southern ridings, reported as follows: “Cheltenham riding: All sections of the main highways have been kept in good order by the power grader. Haync’s Line. Lovett’s Line ami the lower Beat onsfield Valiev Road have abo been trimmed by the grader. A footpath from the Cheltenham riore to a [joint opposite the school,approximately 15 chains long and 7 feet wide, lias been formed and metalled and a foot bridge constructed, the total being £l6 16s 6d. plus some relief work. I arranged for the delivery of i 92 cubic yards of maintenance metal for pot-hole repairs on Cheltenham (.roes; Bond, r fh e work having since been completed. Ino roadman has attended to all repair work throughout the riding. Kiwitea riding: 1 he section of the No. 52 main highway has been kept, in good order by the power grader plant. The following roads other than main highways have been improved bv the No. 2 grader plant: Perry’s, Mcrietli’s and Bryce’s Line; al=o the upper section of the Beaconsfield Valley Road. 'J’he usual maintenance work has received attention and the work of improving, a section of Perrys Line from the junction with Kirnbolton Road to the Kiwitea School is now in progress and should be completed at an early date. Waituna riding: The section of the No. 377 main highwav has been trimmed with the power grader, and three short sections of this road have also been scarified with the power grader plant, thereby effecting a considerable improvement. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work throughout the riding. Arrangements have been made for the delivery of approximately 60 cubic yards of maintenance metal on the lower section of the Rangitikci Valiev Road south. This work is urgent as the road is at present in an unsauMactorv condition for the cream lorry to operate in wet weather. Ongo riding: he main highway section has been trimmed by the grader, and the usual maintenance work carried out. The roadman assisted with the maintenance work in the Cheltenham riding. Kirnbolton ruling: The No. 2 gradoi plant has been operating in this riding and has trimmed Mcßoth’s Line and Junction, Forrest, Terrace, Branch and John s roads. The sections of the No. 52 and 53 main highways have been kept in good condition bv the’ newer grader plant. A dangerous corner on the No. 52 mam highway near the Kirnbolton cemetery liar- been unproved' with the assistance of No. 5 scheme labour. Minor repair work has been carried out in other parts of tho I eep-rv-Dav riding: On the eastern section the roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work on main highways and back roads- also in removing small slips, repairing fences and widening a breakaway on the Peep-o-Day Road. On the western section the usual maintenance work has received attention, and breast works have 1 1 pn erected where washouts took place last year.'
