OROUA DOWNS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OROUA DOWNS, May 17.
On Saturday a good number of spectators were present to see the Oroua Downs Rugby seniors play Rongotea on the home ground. The day was ideal for the game, there being neither wind nor sun to affect the play. Although Oroua Downs won by 21 points to 3 tho game was fairly evenlycontested. Rongotea won the toss and the yellows set the ball in motion for Davies to follow up fast and score a try at the corner flag within half a minute. K. Beard’s kick was unsuccessful. _ Tho blacks commenced business, Dixon being brought down by Lapwith just short of tho line. Both sets of backs threw the ball about enterprisingly. Gimblott was unlucky in not scoring on ono or two occasions, but L. Moffatt did not get very many chances to show out. G. Goldfinch saved his. side on many occasions. The - yellows continued to throw tho ball about and a good back movement resulted in Gimblott going over at the corner. K. Beard added tho extra points with a good kick. Tho half-time whistle sounded shortly after. Rongotea resumed play with renewed energy and kept the yellows busy for a _ considerable time, their offorts to score being unlucky, Rowe being grassed just in time. The yellows gradually worked to tho Rongotea territory whore Fuller opened the play up at every opportunity. Lapwith played a groat game, his fielding and lino finding being of a high order. The yellow forwards were beginning to liven up and A. Gates, after following up fast, scored a good try for K. Beard to convert. Tho blacks sont play to the yellow territory whore Dixon was tackled after a dash down the line. From a scrum in mid-field Lapwith dummied his way through to raco down with Gimblett to Goldfinch, who jumped at tho short punt and saved a certain try. A long throw in saw L. Moffatt race away to send Gimblett down the lino to have a great raco with Dixon and score a few yards from the corner. Beard again piloted the leather right, Tho yellow forwards continued to press and L. Beard followed through to score in a handy position. The kick at goal fell short. Rongotea followed the kick off and kept play in the yellow zone, whero they wore rewarded bv scoring near the corner flag after following up fast. The kick at goal went _ wide. The whistle sounded shortly after, with tho blacks pressing hard. Mr J. Bennett controlled tho game.
