NAVY LEAGUE.

WELLINGTON REMITS. Opposition to competition with British shipping by highly subsidised American vessels is the chief item in the remits of the Wellington branch of the Navy League to the conference at present being conducted by correspondence between tho league’s various branches throughout tho Dominion. When the correspondence has concluded representatives of tho league will put its views before the Government. The Wellington remits are that theNavy League should strongly represent" to the Government: fa) The menace to British shipping and seamen bv the competition of heavily subsidised American vessels built with money advanced by the United States Government to the extent of three-quarters of their cost. (b) The unfairness of the fact that, while tho United States restrict to their own vessels that portion of the Pacific shipping trade which lies between Hawaii and the United States, tho subsidised American vessels should in the carriage of passengers and cargo between Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, freely compete with local British vessels which are debarred from the Hawaii-United States portion of the Pacific trade. (c) The necessity for action to prevent this injustice to British shipping, and for the question to be taken up at the forthcoming Imperial Economic Conference at Ottawa. It is also suggested that the bovernment should be urged to make adequate provision for the co-operation of the New Zealand Air Force with the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. The final remit is that the Navy League branches should encourage and assist inter-Empire trade in every nos. sible way, especially by means of lectures to schools and to women’s societies.
