CONVENT SCHOOL
SPORTS AND PICNIC. Pleasant conditions prevailed for the annual picnic and sports gathering of th© Convent School, held at tho • Showgrounds yesterday, and the outing proved to be most enjoyable, being well conducted by an enterprising com- ■ mitteo under Mr IT. Hyland, chair--1 man and ground superintendent. 1 There was an extensive programme of events. Congratulations were extend- ' ed by Very. Rev. Monsignor MacManus | to the committee on the successful , gathering, and ho expressed the hope > that the children would havo a very ; enjoyable day. He read tho following i telegram sent to His Grace, Arch- > bishop Redwood, Wellington: ' “The 1 Sisters, children, committee and 1 parishioners unite with the priests in ' praying that your Grace may have a prosperous journey to Romo and the Congress and a safe return to New , Zealand.” I The Mayor (Mr Mansford) conveyed • his thanks for the opportunity of be- ■ ing present at the gathering, and ad- - vised tho children to make their enI deavours in life as they were doing in • the races being run that day. The reward in prizes was not everything, he said, but the effort made was the i thing that counted and lie hoped that ' that effort would be carried into prac--1 tice in everyday life. Mr Savage ; (picnic secretary) then called for cheers : for Mr and Mrs Mansford. During an appropriate interval Mr | Hyland thanked those present for their attendance and support and expressed appreciation of tho action of the A. and P. Association in granting the • use of tho grounds. Ho also thanked i the members of tho committee for their help, especially Mr F. TV. Aisher, handicapper, whose excellent handicapping was reflected in the close fin--1 ishes of the races. Complimentary , reference was made to tlxe work of Mr j J. Savage who acted as secretary of . the picnic committee. The lady members of the committee, Mesdames Christensen, Lyons, Jarvis, and Miss Rodgers, deserved the greatest credit for their untiring efforts in ■ catering for the children and looking 1 after the tea arrangements, ice- ' creams, fruit and sweet stalls, etc. ' Monsignor MacManus congratulated ’ the various prize-winners on their I successes and presented tho cups and trophies as follow : 50 vards, boys 8 to 9 years.—Jimmy : O’Sullivan 1, 13. There was an interesting feature in tho old girls’ handicap when it was necessary to run tho final four times before the issue could definitely, he decided, Miss Colleen Kneebone eventually winning from Miss Nora Hickey. The closeness of tho result was a trijbute to the handicapping of Mr Aisher.
