RANGITIKEI.

MABTON, April 8.

Beautiful weather attended the Marton Lawn Tennis Club’s official closing function on Saturday, and tho courts were as fully patronised as on a mid-summer's day. The lawns aro beautifully green and firm at present, and this combined with warm weather made conditions ideal for a most enjoyable afternoon’s tennis. Flower-beds, a riot of colour, completed a bright, animated spectacle. It was a general tea day, and a plenteous spread in the pavilion greeted players at the afternoon tea adjournment, when trophies won during the season were presented by Mrs K. A. Williams, wife of the club’s president. Competition winners were as under: —Ladies’ championship singles: Miss Bessie Gaisford (minus 20). Ladies’ handicap doubles: Mrs F. McLean and Miss Joan Sutcliffe (minus 8). Mixed handicap doubles: Mis 3. Bessio Gaisford and L. Coleman (minus 10). Men’s handicap singles: R. A. Church (plus 7). Men’s handicap doubles: B. A. Church and C. M. Holdaway (minus 5). The Marton Borough Council met on Monday evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) and Crs Gregory, Langston, Barton, Honeyman, Sicely, Williams, Gorrie and Mclndoe. Tho secretary of the Oroua Ladies’ Hockey Sub-Associa-tion wrote applying for tho use of tho western portion of the park for the season with permission to charge at the gate, further stating that it was intended to hold a seven-aside competition, when tho use of both grounds would be necessary.—Granted. Cr Barton was appointed to represent tho council at a conference between tho hockey and football interests. The Wanganui Hospital Board wrote notifying that the practice of giving charitable aid to unemployed relief men during the “stand down” week would be stopped forthwith. —Beceived. Mr W. B. Brant, overseer, reported that during the past month the general maintenance work had been attended to. The town clerk reported that the receipts for tho month wore £1653 Os 2d, including rates £173 17s lid, gas consumers £224 15s, gas fittings £l3l 6s 9d, coke, tar, etc., £l7O 4s 9d. MABTON, April 6.

The periodic netting of perch in the Marton reservoir is shortly to be effected. These fish have multiplied rapidly and it was stated at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council that the reservoir was overstocked especially now that the water supply was reduced. A suggestion made to the council on Monday evening by His Worship the Mayor is to be given effect to. That is the raising of the retaining wall by another two feet, using relief labour. This would give an additional B—lo million gallons capacity at an estimated cost of not more than £IBO. ’They had j'ust survived as long a dry spell as they were likely to have, bub there was every reason why the supply should be increased, nevertheless. _ Eight Levin Borough Councillors visited Marton yesterday, arriving at 10.30 a.m. They were taken with local councillors to the gasworks, and then driven round the borough. In the afternoon they were entertained on the bowling greens. A match between the Taihape and Marton secondary schools was played at Taihape on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the visitors by five wickets and 12 runs.
