WAGES TAX.

INCREASE UNDER CONSIDERATION WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. Although no actual decision has yet been reached, it is learned on reliable authority that the Government has under consideration a proposal to increase the wages tax to Is in the £. It hns long since been evident that the unemployment legislation passed last session is not. sufficient to furnish the Government with the finance necessary for its broader relief proposals, which are to be on more comprehensive lines than any previously attempted. Whatever decision Cabinet may reach the increase in the wages tax will be substantial, and it is expected that when the new amount becomes enforceable a wider margin of exemption will be allowed of those receiving low wages or salary, with the object of preventing extreme hardship in cases where -the earner’s resources are already taxed to braking point. , There is a suggestion current that should the tax be increased to Is in the pound the possibility of a further wages “cut” of 5 per cent, may largely disappear.
